Raised Beds

With this grant, WCA will enhance our elementary school's efforts by planting raised garden beds. We intend to sell the produce we harvest and donate a portion to food banks, contributing to our community service projects.

2024-2025 Update

WCA was thrilled to embark on the journey of establishing our very first garden this year. We kicked off our container gardening adventure in October, starting with four carefully chosen containers, each equipped with an efficient built-in drip irrigation system to ensure the plants receive the right amount of water. The students played an integral role in this project, eagerly assisting with the planting of vibrant yellow and purple pansies, as well as ornamental cabbage and kale, which brought a beautiful touch of color to our space. They also had the opportunity to plant delicate violas and striking snapdragons, further adding to the garden's charm.

One of the exciting aspects of this project was that students were able to apply their math skills to real-world gardening, using the square foot method as a guide to ensure optimal spacing for each plant. This hands-on experience helped reinforce their understanding of measurement and planning. Even throughout the colder winter months, the students remained actively involved in caring for the garden, and they were thrilled to discover that the snow didn’t harm their plants, a testament to the resilience of their hard work.

As we look ahead to spring, the students are filled with anticipation as they begin planning for the next stage of our garden. They are especially excited to focus on the planting of beautiful spring flowers, using this process as an opportunity to delve deeper into learning about sequencing in writing. The careful steps involved in growing our Bell Peppers, Marigolds, Begonias, and many other flowers will offer them a practical way to understand and practice the importance of order and structure in writing, while also continuing to nurture our blossoming garden.
